Why should I get an EV charger?

Faster

Residential chargers are up 12x faster than portable trickle charging

Cost Savings

Charging at home is often more cost-effective than using public charging stations, especially with the ability to take advantage of lower electricity rates during off-peak hours. Over time, this can lead to significant savings on your overall charging costs.

Convenience and Accessibility

Having an EV charger at home means you can charge your vehicle overnight or whenever it’s convenient, eliminating the need to search for public charging stations. This saves time and ensures that your vehicle is always ready to go when you need it.

Increased Property Value and Appeal

Installing an EV charger can enhance the value and appeal of your apartment. As electric vehicles become more popular, having a personal charging station can be a sought-after feature, making your property more attractive to future renters or buyers who own EVs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Should I Install an EV Charger?

A charger for a single resident can be installed either directly from the tenancy switchboard if viable, or it can be wired from common power or existing EV charging infrastructure. Each approach will have different requirements to ensure it complies to your apartment’s by-laws and will be subject to OC approval.

How Do I Get This Installation Approved?

You will need to contact your strata or OC for them to approve of a potential EV charger installation, as the installation will affect common areas.

What Is Involved in a Single Residential Installation?

The charger will need to be powered via a circuit breaker, with cabling to be routed to the charger location via cable tray. Depending on the requirements of installation, a cat6 ethernet cable may also be required. Accurate work will be determined via a site inspection and may be necessary if work is to be conducted through various floors in the apartment.

Is All Infrastructure Owned by the Building?

The equipment, depending on who has paid for the infrastructure will be owned entirely by the payee. EVSE can be engaged for any further works, as well as for post-installation maintenance.

What Is the Average Charge Time for Each Option?

Depending on the active managing of the charger’s load – if full supply is available meaning no power limitations, the chargers can charge:
– 22kW – up to ~120-130km of range each hour
– 7kW – up to 40km of range each hour

This is dependent on the vehicle plugged in, some vehicles take 7kW single phase, 11kW three-phase and seldom 22kW three-phase.

Who is paying for power usage, how does the building recover these costs, and what is the kW rate that will be paid back to the building?

This depends on how the charger is being powered, after the tenant’s meter or via common infrastructure.
– If wired directly from their tenant meter, EV charger usage will outlined in the standard electricity bill

What is the warranty on EVSE’s infrastructure?

The hardware and installation come default with 2 year warranty if EVSE is at fault with the charger and installation.

How much will EV infrastructure cost?

An initial consultation and site inspection will need to be organised to determine costings around your chosen EV charger implementation. Each site varies vastly in terms of practicality of installation as well determining site specific conditions such as available supply and cable run distances.
